What an honor to be able to work with Gil Scott-Heron whose work has influenced writers, academics and musicians alike. His work during the 1970s helped shape and engender subsequent African-American music genres, such as hip hop and neo soul and, due to his setting poetry to music, he has been described by music writers as "the godfather of rap."
I had the incredible opportunity to be on all the string dates for "I'm New Here," the last album Gil made in his life, released by XL Recordings in 2010. What an extraordinary man. Gone too soon.
